Topsy Turvy, Color Studies, and more

I've almost finished the Topsy-Turvy doll. Just a few more finishing touches, that I will photograph and post ASAP!

I've also started some color studies. I built some tiny cardboard boxes so I can paint the same shape in different colors, on different color fabrics.

AND some more portraits for the Influential Women series.

AND! I went to the BYO Printshop on Tuesday and etched my plates for the Inanimate Objects Touching Each Other Inappropriately series. Next week: proofing, and maybe getting some good prints done!

Productivity and Bereavement

Somewhat luckily, my computer was feeling a bit under the weather for a few weeks there. So, naturally, I have been spending a lot of time in the studio.

I finally finished the barbie piece, but now I have to build individual shadow boxes for each of them.

I've also been working on a series of portraits of the women who inspired me when I was a child. Its a fun project, only using black and white paint, on paper, and I'm leaving them relatively loose.

And: whether or not I ever finish it, I'm starting a quilt in which every square will depict a photograph that I have of Hans, who died a little over a month ago. I may sew his ashes into a mesh material on the opposite side, and display it hanging from the middle of a room. We'll see how far I even get with it. One step at a time, one day at a time.

I know I keep saying that I'm working on so many projects, but I really am! It's just that I have too many at once, and I don't make a ton of progress on any of them in particular. But, I've gotten the ball rolling, and once its rolling, I should be able to keep things from gathering moss.

I ordered my spinning wheel, and should be getting that in the mail tomorrow! I am going to use it for my root structure, and then of course for fun yarn spinning, and I'd like to start dying yarn with natural dyes (particularly beets!)

I am currently knitting a mobius strip scarf (yes, the right way!... ok, I had some help.)

And I finally scanned in my negatives, with the help of wonderful Eli. We don't really know what we're doing, and it turns out that I scanned them in much too small, but now at least I can see what I've got! Next Thursday I'll go back to the darkroom and scan 'em right!

And, I've even started taking a French class: one step closer to applying to Penn ...the GREs, on the other hand, are going to rip me a new one. One step at a time.

I'm not a high speed train, I'm just glad to be a rolling stone.

Sorry for the horrible photo, I forgot to take a photo once it was dry! Britta and Sudit came to get it last Saturday and I think they were really happy with it! (Either that, or they're great actors, and I don't think that's a common occurence for Hopkins kids).

Also, I sold another hair painting last week at the Mutter! I've got to bring some more to the store. And I've got to get to the studio more often and crank some work out! Someone commission me something!

Anselm Kiefer

I was in NYC with Erin for a few days this week, and we saw some museums and we saw some art, and then we went to the Gogosian Gallery on West 24th St, with the Anselm Kiefer show "Next Year in Jerusalem". I had never seen Kiefer in person, and I don't think I've been moved that much by an artist's work in a very long time. It was amazing to see so much of his work in one place too. It really overwhelmed me with emotion(s) and inspiration. His work just doesn't photograph very well, but some stolen images of the show that attempt to represent:

A Burial Shroud for some Roots

So I've been working on a lot of things (as usual).

Hair art is going well, I even sold one on Halloween. They're going much more smoothly too, I've got a much better handle on how to make them.

I also am working on a commission for a lovely couple in Baltimore. They drove up a few weeks ago and I took the reference photos. Its going very well, and I hope to finish it up when I return from Thanksgiving in Columbus Ohio!

The studio is winterized and let's hope it's warm enough! Sheets from circle thrift, I will be buying you soon enough!

For some more serious talk, though. Last Tuesday I walked to the subway for work as I usually do. There is a block a few blocks from my house in which the side I walk along was a big overgrown field. But last Tuesday they broke ground for some new houses they're putting in (yay gentrification) and on Saturday they were already pretty far along putting in cinderblocks. I walked along the sidewalk as far as I could go, and then there in front of me, was the root structure of one of the trees I most enjoyed in that yard. There were kittens who lived there, and morning glory all over the yard and the tree and the fence. I saw the roots and I immediately saw it in my mind's eye wrapped ever so delicately in white yarn, somewhat like a burial shroud, somewhat like the crane wife spinning it.

But then I walked away thinking that I must have seen that image somewhere else. I emailed Erin to ask if I was crazy. She sent me a link to Nina Katchadourian as a response. My favorite is her Uninvited Collaborations with Nature section. And definitely the mended spider webs project the most.

But long story short, I got Eli and Celia to help me move the roots (which either had been hacked apart before or after I saw it initially) into my studio.

I am currently seeking white yarn. Any white yarn, but preferably natural and thin. Even student spun. Even...anything.

I usually don't do nature work, but this one sort of attacked me first.

Hair Art!

I have actually been working on a bunch of stuff (including, my halloween costume!)

But I did finally manage to finish and frame some of the hair art... but... then I remembered to photograph them. Sorry about the lack of professionalism in the photos.

The big ones were especially hard to photograph, but I was able to block some glare off the small one using the big ones!

I already started a new batch of them, and I have two more left to finish from the original group. Not bad for round one!

Well, I made it to Brooklyn this time. Saw some amazing people, museums, and I understand NYC/Brooklyn much more than I did. All in all, mission accomplished!

My AAM card lets me in to any AAM Museum (and others too!) for free, sometimes with a guest too! So I ended up going to 10 museums in 4 days, and my friend Dave got to go to some with me, including the Guggenheim!
The MET is always a good time, and I always end up seeing a new Alfred Emile Stevens painting! He's one of my favorites, and I can't find a book of his work anywhere. I can usually spot him a mile away too!
This lovely work is by Kees van Dongen. I am so in lust with these color choices! (Even more intense in person of course)

I had just enough time to run through the Natural History Museum before having to head back to the Gug, who were nice enough to hold my bag while I toured the city without it for a bit.

Wednesday Dave and I went to the MOMA.

How he loves his art!
I really loved this Matisse. I couldn't look away. I need to paint more nudes. (!!!!!!!) (And this particular painting wasn't even at the big Matisse show (on the 4th floor?), and that was really good. We were pretty tired, so I just ran through it while Dave rested outside. It was like a miniature depiction of my week, just running around looking at art smiling wildly and feeling a little bit insane and a lotta bit excited.)

Finally saw a Kara Walker in person! It was really amazing.

Dave left and I hit up the American Folk Museum, sort of just breezed through it, but it was interesting. Then I met him for his fringe show, In the Schoolyard. Not so much my cup of tea, but enjoyable nonetheless. And I got to see two fringe shows! Talk about an education!

Then I booked it to the New Museum, where I couldn't take any photos, but had a really good time there too. The space is amazing! Ran to the Whitney, and had an amazing time. I had only been there for the 60s show a few years ago, but was awesome (really, how many other words are as pure as "amazing" and "awesome"?) Then bolted (note use of increasingly hurried adjectives, as my time in NYC runs short!) to the Frick where I finally saw Ingres' Contesse d'Haussonville... and cried. Like a sap. I didn't expect to, but I love him.

And the Neue Museum. I remembered my love for Schiele and Klimt, as well as discovered George Minne, and educated myself in Otto Dix, of whom I had remained mostly ignorant through my art education.

One more museum: The Brooklyn Museum. It was so much bigger than I was expecting! And I had forgotten about their Warhol exhibit. I have also been rather ignorant of him, passing him off as "that pop artist" but now I know better!

Then some Kiki Smith, although perhaps I didn't spend enough time with her.

It was really the icing on the cake!

I have a TON of new ideas for new paintings (especially inspired by Matisse- I am starting two large canvases, for painting from life Leslie's living room or kitchen area. Things like PAINT BIG, ITS IMPORTANT! kept coming into my head, and I listened.)

I've been working on this abstract (or.. not so abstract?) piece for a few weeks now. The hardest part is knowing when its done: not feeling lazy, and not beating a dead horse either.

I worked on Barbie the other day: Celia came to the studio and worked on her ragrug for a while, and she had her computer. I used it to work on Barbie. I had been using my computer for references photos back when my studio was in my apartment, and ever since I've moved, I haven't been able to work on her. I think it just needs to stay being the computer, and she's almost done anyway. Now I know what the problem is, and I know how to fix it!

I realize how many things I am working on. Ugh, if anyone has a small and easy-to-use sewing machine, either sell it to me, or tell me where I can buy it. Why is it that summer is so expensive?!

In the Studio

Elizabeth sat for me a few weeks ago, and I was just really glad to be painting the figure from life again! Of course the best part is her shirt, but thats fine too.

Haven't really been to the studio too much since Elizabeth sat for me, been running around, doing ghost tours and the like.

But I'm really almost done with the Barbie piece. I'm thinking about building shadow boxes for each one, but, that's a lot of work.

I've been really into how things look behind glass lately. Took some reference photos of the distortion of colorful objects behind paned glass at one of the subway stops. Finally am doing something with them. It has a lot of work to go, but its fun!

And I restarted Cupid&Psyche, I am curious to see where this one goes. I've never done the same painting twice before, I think it'll be a really interested study.

Andrew Inspiration

So Andrew finally sat for me! Its ok, but I'd like for this to be the first of many sessions.

I showed this silly drawing in my sketchbook to Andrew a few weeks ago, and he loved it so much, that I was inspired to make more.

So basically they're just about how awkward touching is, especially when posing for a camera or in a movie. Always so forced, with scripted lines.

They're just sketches, I'd actually like to make some prints of them, since there is a B.Y.O. Printmaking shop across the street. I wonder if they'd make good greeting cards, to increase the awkwardness it could be like "Happy Birthday!" and "Happy Valentines Day" and "Merry Christmas!" Ideas and opinions would be greatly appreciated since this is the first time I've attempted something so silly and fun with the intention of marketing them to a public! Maybe I'll even get an Etsy page...

Anyway, these are the first of many, I hope!

No Paints: Hair Art!

I think the last time I posted this painting, it had also been weeks since I had worked on it.

If you have been wondering why I haven't posted any new paintings, its because I left my paints in Atlantic City over a month ago, when I was house sitting for my friend's parents. Another friend from the area is expected to come visit, but I don't know when. Blargh.

But I have started working on a new project. Because the Mutter Museum sells artwork at the gift shop, I have been encouraged to make and sell some work of my own. I have to wait until I get the form back from the Rights and Permissions Manager before I can photograph anything to make art of, but until then, I stole this image off the internet to use as a practice run. And then maybe I can jazz it up with my own photograph of the subject.

It took a while to convince people to send me their hair, but once I got one small package, I realized how a little goes a long way! I now have 3 donated bags of hair, for which I am most grateful!

I didn't post this because I was frustrated that it wasn't turning out like I'd hoped. But instead, I sort of like it now. I started it a little over a month ago, and have worked on it only a few times, perhaps again tonight. I wanted to post an image of it before I continued with it.

I think I am going to move the whole thing over to the right, I had initially wanted more of the refrigerator in there, but I have a hard time blocking out space, especially when I am more or less in the middle of it. Also, its times like these that I wish MICA had taught me even a 3 minute lesson on perspective.

I've been having a lot of trouble with this piece, partly because I am terribly at landscape painting... the outdoors is terribly chaotic to the eyes, and I try to make sense of it, but, there is just no sense to be made. So I had two great interviews this week, after spending Christmas and the days immediately following it, in New Jersey catching up with awesome people! I hope I get one of these part time jobs, and that it will be just enough to keep the art-cooker up at full blast, while making some cash too!

Its amazing what a difference there is, documenting work in artificial light. But, you get the gist of it. I am thinking about totally redoing the background. I took some awesome reference photos at the PMA last week... I need to do some digital sketching!

I got a decent amount done on Medusa, which is great because she was giving me a lot of trouble earlier this summer, and I was extremely frustrated by it. I'm still playing around with the columns (references from the Philadelphia train station).
I've still got a lot of work to do.
But I think this guy is done. He's for my bathroom, just a little something to brighten it up (ok, so the room is bright yellow with an almost rainbow shower curtain, whatever).
I really liked working on the pieces for Lauren this summer. Although frustrating at times, its good to just think about color and form, without anything to limit you. I am still limited by them, though.

So I am officially on Holiday! Although I am applying to jobs and keeping busy!

I was suppressing all artistic negativities for the past two months and neglected to post these images which I did in fact do before then. They are not finished but should be posted nonetheless.

I will be reading art history and literature, as well as painting frequently these next few weeks!

Also, the light was nice on the building across the street, and I took a photograph: does it look familiar?

I started watching Dexter again last night. There is a repetitive thing with a sliced up barbie. I had seen the first few episodes back in January I think. I wonder if that image sparked this project. Interesting.

One Arm In

So I also did this the other night, when the watercolors were out.
I did this tonight. Noel left some primed canvases, and I think I could use a painting in the bathroom. I guess I also thought I could use some pre-painting enjoyment before diving in to the piece. I think I'll work on this one more night, but next week or something. Hmm.

Warming up

I found this adorable plant at work last week, and I did some studies of it. Only this one came out. It was enjoyable. Like a doodle, with intention. I think hanging out in the 1533+Yelena Studio was really good for my motivation muscle.

I did manage to finish all the drawings for the new piece, and when I rabbit skin glued them to the MDF, the pencil didn't run. This is wonderful. I ruined one of the papers trying to shove it into place, but I did another drawing, took the least amount of time, and theyre all dry and everything. I think tonight will be painting night.

I just remembered I never posted this photoshopped concoction of the paintings together, as they sat on my wall until Lauren came to get them. She has yet to send me the picture text of them on her wall, but whenever that happens, I will be sure to at least try to figure out how to post that as well.

Still no art on my part, however I am hoping to hear back from Project Basho soon, and Celia sent me this link: to the Little Show of Horrors, which I am planning on attending. I will also be in NYC on Wednesday to see the Francis Bacon show and maybe even muster up enough energy to get to the Guggenheim.

Paralytic Fears of Post-Collegiate Highway Hypnosis

This is the only way I can think of explaining how I fear the future of my own state of mind. I love being high on caffeine- that adrenaline pumps me up and gets me going to push me further, getting me genuinely high on life. But lately I have no reason to drink coffee in the first place. Of course, I have to, otherwise I just plain feel sleepy. This is really no problem, it is just really frustrating to me that my relationship with it is so drastically different than it used to be.

As far as art goes, I have been trying to make art so that I don't just plain stop making art, but on the other hand I feel that I may just need a healthy break from it, of course assuming that this break doesn't lead to the stoppage of my art-making muscle. So I am now abstaining from making art, and will resume again sometime in the beginning of September. Already I have found myself thinking about art voluntarily rather than scared, and forcing myself to. And I have taken off work next Wednesday to see the Francis Bacon show at the Met before it closes. This might be magic.

Well, I think this is it. Some detail shots:

I think they are really not bad for my first pieces like this. However, I think its funny that I only ended up doing one sketch for them because I simply didn't know how to approach even a simple sketch of this sort.
And that is pretty much the approach I used. Put color down, let it rest. Do it again.

I do like the overall images, but I am really interested in the detail shots. I suppose I will have to figure out a way to sort of emulate that look, despite that I did approach the second painting using larger blocks of color. I am currently reading Varieties of Modernism by Paul Wood which is proving to be very informative, although I just started it a few days ago.

Thanks to Lauren (who has requested to not know anything about either of them until she sees them in person...) for asking me to do these, otherwise who knows how long I would have put it off!

I started the second one yesterday. Very different approach from the first one. It bothered me that the first one had too few sizeable chunks of color, however, this one has fewer "moments". I've been looking at a lot of Franz Kline, although by "a lot" I mean whatever one can find within five minutes of Google time.

Project: experiment

Still working on the first painting, and really have been neglecting it. I think if I photodocument my progress, I'll feel less scared about changing it so drastically. And its all sorts of relaxing and nice, to just mix paint and put it where I feel at that moment it should go. So far, still using the palette knife, probably in aversion to the waste of paint that occurs when using huge brushes for one or two strokes, and then all the large brush washing..
If you're confused about the connection the previous image, I am turning the painting periodically until I see what's going on.
So I think its going to just continue like this for a while. Maybe I'll glue some stuff, and scrape off some. But uh, other than that, I'm kind of at a loss.
I have a list of 20th century art history books I need to choose from and..... learn all the Art History I've been avoiding.

ink washes and other experiments

Living in Philadelphia has proved so far, to be the right decision. My biggest fear was that I would not be inspired to make art. However, a friend of mine has commissioned me to paint two experimental paintings. We discussed specific artists and specific paintings, and her likes and dislikes. I gave her an idea about what I plan to try, and am being honest about that I have no idea how they will end up. I started the first one, and hope to change it every few days for the rest of the month. Will start the other one soon too, hopefully. State one:

I went to the Cezanne show at the PMA: it was great. It was inspiring, however I still don't know what my immediate artistic goals should be. I am determined to experiment for a bit, but I think some regimented life-studies will be good too. I have a moving image in my head as well, but... to create an animation? I think it loops, but its one of those things where if I try to put it on paper and fail, it'll be gone forever. What a fear!

Same dye lot, but different roving makes for slightly different dye absorbency.
I am pleased to announce that I will be taking yarn-making up as my official new hobby. I think it will especially be good for being social in fishtown, as hand made yarns are sort of a wonderfully appreciated trend right now.
